Family Support Coordinator- D.H. Stanton Center

SUMMARY DESCRIPTION: To inform, involve, and inspire mothers and fathers in a way that supports their child in entering school ready; helps them to nurture and financially provide for their children; links them to community resources and supports their personal goals.

 

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES: (Asterisk for essential job duties.)

  • Facilitate Friendships & Mutual Support
  • Create an atmosphere of family support within the center according to the principles and practices of family-centered childcare.
  • Facilitate relationship building with families and among families.
  • Support the development of families’ social support networks.
  • Promote an understanding of different cultures & backgrounds.
  • Strengthen Parenting
  • Promote and build families’ knowledge of child development and parenting skills.
  • Encourage and support bonding between parents and children.
  • Familiarize families with the use of and rationale for our educational philosophy and positive guidance philosophy.
  • Support all families to develop positive parenting skills by sharing information specific to their family form (i.e. grandparents raising grandchildren, single parents, blended families, special needs children, etc.)
  • Respond to Family Crisis/Link Families to Service & Opportunities
  • Develop personal relationships with families by taking the time to get to know them individually.
  • Assess families’ strengths and needs and support them to reach their goals.
  • Build relationships with agencies and organizations in the community that are potential resources for families.
  • Link families with appropriate community resources.
  • Observe & Respond to Early Warning Signs
  • Work with the center management team to respond effectively to the needs of the children and families.
  • Follow Sheltering Arms procedures for referring children for further professional evaluation when necessary.
  • Facilitate communication between families and other agencies/individuals working with children.
  • Support and advocate for families through the referral process and help them understand their rights and expectations.
  • Follow Sheltering Arms procedures for referring children/families for suspected abuse/neglect.
  • Value & Support Parents
  • Promote parent leadership by actively including parents in planning and implementing center events.
  • Support families to identify and access resources within their communities.
  • Assist mothers and fathers in finding and maintaining employment, job training, or enrollment in school.
  • Provide opportunities for mothers and fathers to engage in literacy and learning activities with their children such as reading to them.
  • Involve mothers and fathers in advocacy actions each month such as voting, acting on current issues, and knowing the elected name of their elected officials and how to contact them.
  • Discuss transitions with families and develop a transition plan for children as they move from one program or classroom to another.
  • Kindergarten Readiness & Transitions
  • Facilitate smooth transitions from PreK to Kindergarten and EHS to PHS by building relationships with appropriate community agencies (schools, other Head Start programs), working with them to plan transition activities.
  • Support families through the transition process and familiarize them with the expectations of Kindergarten or other programs they may be entering.
  • Program Implementation
  • Ensure that all children have appropriate health records and screenings on file with the appropriate time period according to Sheltering Arms procedures (ASQ immunizations, health checks, EED, dental exam, etc.).
  • Maintain appropriate confidentiality in all matters regarding the children and families served.
  • Monitor attendance and follow the proper procedures for documenting in Procare and following up with families.
  • Maintain appropriate documentation of all activities and records in the Sheltering Arms data base software as required by Sheltering Arms Policies & Procedures. 
  • Collect family tuition according to Sheltering Arms procedures.
  • Invoice community agencies for tuition according to their requirements.
  • Have a clear understanding of the requirements and regulations from Sheltering Arms funding sources, licensing and accreditation entities, and national initiatives, such as, the Head Start Performance Standards, Child Care Licensing, NAEYC accreditation, Bright from the Start Center of Distinction, GA PreK Resource Coordination, Strengthening Families, as well as specific partnering organizations.

 

Teamwork & Professionalism:

  • Participate as an active and responsible member of the center management team.
  • Demonstrates a belief in the philosophy of Sheltering Arms.
  • Has a good attendance record and reports to the center director when planning to be absent.
  • Follow center rules.
  • Maintain a professional appearance and conducts self in a professional manner at all times.
  • Is a willing learner and accepts constructive criticism.
  • Display energy and enthusiasm in performing the FSC job.
  • Answer the telephone in an enthusiastic and helpful manner.
  • Attend workshops planned by the BFTS or other funding, partnering, or regulatory entities and use the information.
  • Attend workshops planned by SA and use the information.
  • Belong to and participate in a professional organization related to child care and family support.
  • Send information to the administrative office in a timely manner.

 

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES, AND SKILLS:

  • Must have a high degree or oral and written communication skills.
  • Must be familiar with best practices for family-centered, quality early childhood education.
  • Must be able to teach and facilitate parent meetings and classes.
  • Must have basic computer skills.
  • Must be able to visually observe and hear children from all areas of the classroom and playground from a distance of at least 70 feet.
  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs.
  • Be able to sit on the floor to interact with children.

 

EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in family and consumer sciences; child and family development; social work or closely related field with at least two years of experience in a family support type position.
