Vice President - Development & Communications

SUMMARY DESCRIPTION:  Reporting to the CEO, the Vice President (VP), Development and Communications serves as a key leadership team member and an active participant in making strategic decisions affecting Sheltering Arms. In partnership with the CEO, this position is responsible for all fundraising including annual giving, major gifts, planned giving, capital campaigns, special events, in-kind and volunteer resources. The successful candidate will help forge new relationships to build Sheltering Arms’ visibility, impact and financial resources. 

S/he will expand and diversify Sheltering Arms’ donor base pipeline and work closely with other team members to secure funding for new initiatives. In addition, the VP will work closely with the board of directors and support board members as they take on a more active fundraising role.

It is expected that the amount raised by Sheltering Arms will increase in future years as the VP, Development and Communications systematically and effectively strengthens the organization’s overall fundraising capacity.

The VP Development and Communications will also oversee all internal and external communications, brand management,  public relations, marketing and social media.

           

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES: (Asterisk for essential job duties.)

  1. Supervise a team of communications and development staff members.
  2. Support and partner with the CEO and board  members on all major fundraising initiatives.
  3. Actively work with the President and CEO and senior staff to develop and implement a comprehensive development strategy to include individuals, corporate, foundation, government grants, events, etc.
  4. Maintain and build fundraising database; generate fundraising reports for board and accounting.
  5. Manage system for donor and volunteer recognition, including timely thank you notes that comply to IRS standards, reports as required by funders and pledge due notices.
  6. Collaborate with the VP, Finance to manage Sheltering Arms’ financial strategy.
  7. Oversee research funding sources and trends, with foresight, to help position Sheltering Arms ahead of major funding changes or trends.
  8. Research new potential sources of support and implement strategies for introducing them to Sheltering Arms.
  9. Promote Sheltering Arms as its representative to the community in networking opportunities and presentations reaching target audiences.
  10. Plan and execute the organization’s annual signature fundraising event, the Celebration Dinner.
  11. Develop and execute an annual resource development plan, including major gifts, annual campaign, board campaign, and special events.
  12. Oversee the development and execution of a comprehensive communications plan that includes marketing, public relations social media and internal/external communications.
  13. Develop and execute annual direct mail campaigns, board campaigns, and other face-to-face, print, and online solicitations of individual donors to support annual operating budget.
  14. Oversee the organization’s brand management strategy and the development of  print materials for all internal and external communications, including but not limited to newsletters, annual reports, advertisements, promotional literature, stationery, displays, brochures, etc. 
  15. Develop, promote, and manage planned giving program.
  16. Promote, and manage agency-wide special events for fundraising and stewardship purposes.
  17. Support local centers in implementing appropriate, effective fundraising activities.
  18. Research feasibility, develop strategies, and implement an action plan for capital, endowment, and other special campaigns.

 

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES, AND SKILLS:  

  • Proficient in all Microsoft applications; knowledge of Raiser’s Edge.
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills, including public speaking and presentation skills.
  • Ability to influence and engage a wide range of donors and build long-term relationships.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervising personnel, co-workers, representatives from all levels of government, civic organizations, business professionals and general public.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills with exceptional attention to detail; ability to work in a high-paced environment managing multiple projects and deadlines.
  • Flexible and adaptive style; a leader who can positively impact both strategic and tactical fundraising initiatives.
  • Works independently while understanding the necessity for communicating and coordinating work efforts with other employees and departments.
  • Strong research skills.
  • High energy and passion for Sheltering Arms’ mission is essential.
  • Professional level of confidentiality in handling employee information.

 

EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE:  

  • Master’s Degree in Nonprofit Management, Communications or related field; certifications in business, marketing and/or fund raising desirable.
  • Minimum of 7 years professional fundraising experience is required in a nonprofit organization, preferably in the fields of early childhood education or education services.
  • Minimum 5 years of progressive management experience.
  • Tangible experience of having expanded and cultivated existing donor relationships over time.
  • Demonstrated success in development function (managing and forging relationships with multiple donor sources).
  • Familiarity with metro Atlanta business community and high net worth individuals a plus.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Must be able to lift 30 lbs. without assistance; 50 lbs. with assistance. Position requires the ability to reach with hands and arms as well as to use hands to finger, handle or feel. Ability to talk and hear as well as stand, walk, and sit required. Occasional need to stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl.

 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:   

Willingness and ability to travel to all center locations and able to work a flexible schedule. Must pass a criminal background check and also a drug screen.
