Family Support Intern

*Unpaid internship

*Requires a 6 month commitment

 

SUMMARY DESCRIPTION:   The Family Support Intern will work directly with the Family Support Coach and be responsible for engaging and involving families in parent leadership activities, parent meetings, transition activities, special events, other activities and services that support families as the primary nurturers, experts and teachers of their child in order to prepare them for school and life success. The Family Support Intern will support the two-generation efforts to impact children and their families in education, health and well-being, economic supports, postsecondary and employment pathways with social capital opportunities. This position requires the intern to be flexible in their duties to support the work of the Center Management Team.

 

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Creates a positive, welcoming climate for families.
  • Utilizes all informal and formal opportunities to build and maintain relationships with families.
  • Promotes parent leadership by actively including parents in planning and implementing activities.
  • Facilitates networks and group activities that support families’ strengths, interests and needs.
  • Promotes and build families’ knowledge of child development and parenting skills.
  • Involves families in advocacy issues.
  • Provides opportunities for families to engage in literacy and learning activities with their child.
  • Observes and participates in the classroom as a strategy to support the interdisciplinary team.
  • Maintains confidentiality in all matters regarding the children and families served.
  • Maintains files/records and document services in Data Management System.
  • Other duties as assigned

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES, AND SKILLS:

  • Excellent analytical and listening skills
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral
  • Ability to work sensitively with a diverse population
  • Ability to work Independently and self-directed
  • Ability to demonstrate conflict-resolution skills

EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Completed or working toward a college degree, preferably in a related field (e.g. Education, Human Services, Social Work, and Child and Family Development)
  • Previous internship or related experience working with families in a social service setting a plus
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work the center management team as a cooperative and supportive team member
  • Ability to communicate and respond in a manner that consistently demonstrates respect and concern
  • Self-motivated, good organizational and interpersonal skills, detail-oriented, ability to multitask and prioritize
  • Experience with Technology-using Microsoft Office Suite and Data Management Systems

CERTIFICATE AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS:

None required

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Must be able to lift 50 lbs; 30 lbs without assistance.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:   

Willingness and ability to travel to multiple Sheltering Arms sites.  Must pass a criminal background check and also a drug screen.
